Farewell To HermonAny discussion about technologically advanced school districts has to include a few words about the Hermon School District, in Hermon, Maine.I know, you're probably thinking "What good thing can come out of Maine?" in much the same way people asked "What good thing can come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:46). But I'm not kidding. The Hermon School District has one of the most advanced computer and technology departments anywhere. Several years ago, when I was just starting out my software business, I was doing all desktop applications, and knew absolutely nothing about web design or websites. The Hermon District took me under their wings, so to speak, and helped me get set up. And ever since, they have hosted my website absolutely free of charge. I offered to pay them, I offered to give them discounted programming services, but their technology guru insisted that it was good for them to have me hosted on their servers. I never really understood how it was good for them to have me on board, using up their bandwidth, and not paying for it, but obviously, I didn't complain! ![]() Their system was remarkable, and my website had a very low downtime percent. It was great for me. As I said to their technology guy a couple days ago, having free hosting was a great boost to help me get started in business, and I was able to "pay it forward" by offering free or discounted software services for various charities and educational institutions. Lately, though, I've been wishing I had a little bit more control over my hosting - various features I wanted that weren't yet available at Hermon. So I've been exploring options. And last week I found a web hosting program that had all the features I wanted, at a reasonable price. So I've been debating...do I want to say farewell to Hermon? Call it an irony, call it a sign, call it what you will, but yesterday I received a notice from Hermon that they were going to have to start charging me for hosting. And the price? It was to the penny the same fee as I would be paying at the other site, which offered me the additional features I wanted. So...after many years, and with much gratitude, I will be saying Farewell to Hermon. I wish you all well, and thank you much for all your service. Posted On Apr 22, 2005 at 6:12 AM
