Trouble At Irving and Death Threats

The excitement for the day occurred when I went to Irving to gas up the church van, before heading down to Stow for Family Bible Time. While I was gassing up, someone came out of Irving, screaming obscenities, and threatening to kill people. If you were to make a list of all the words that aren't in my vocabulary, I would say this guy used most of them.

So he's just pacing up and down the parking lot, while I'm gassing up, and screaming at someone (apparently an employee) who was inside. Then Wayne comes to the door and tells him to get lost, or he's calling the cops. The reply was that if he f- called the f- cops, he was going to f- kill him.

Very nice man.

When I paid for the gas, Charlene asked me, "Has he gone?"

"Yes."

"Why did he leave?"

I laughed. "I think it was because I wouldn't stop looking at him."

Anyway, I couldn't help but think how pathetic that was, to threaten someone like that, knowing - of course - that he could never follow through on his threats without ruining his own life. But that's one way thugs and crooks manage to get their way, by playing on the fears of others. It made me think of what Pastor B spoke on yesterday morning. He talked about overcoming fear, and pointed out that many great people have given variations on the statement: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

In Psalm 27:1, David writes:

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the defense of my life;
Whom shall I dread?

Evil wants us to fear it, because that's the greatest power it has over us. Paul wrote to Timothy that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self discipline.

Anyway, on a completely different subject, Family Bible Time (our own version of Vacation Bible School) in Stow went very well. We had a total of 12 kids, which they said was very good for their first day. We even had a couple teens, and adults, which was nice. One lady who lives down the road wants to get her daughter started coming to Sunday School and church, and thought this would be a good way to get her introduced to church.

I had three teens working with me today - Josh, Becky, and Rachel. Tomorrow I expect to see at least a couple more. The three I had today did a great job; Josh led games and music, Rachel did the memory verse, and Becky did the review game at the end. On the way home Becky said, "I can tell this is going to be a really good week."

For sure!

*sigh* I just got a call from the CE director in Friendship, hoping I'd come out and do a service this fall. I had to tell him, "No, I'm still staying pretty close to home to work with my teens." That's the fourth church I've had call me in the last week.

On Aug 9, 2005 pastor Jim B. wrote: Pray for a good week of teaching, etc. at Stowe. So glad some of the teens are involved.

Doug Replied: yes, it is exciting to see the teens involved. Today we had 5 teens helping out, plus a friend of one of the teens who wanted to see what we were up to!
