http and https - Protecting Your Personal Data

Just a quick reminder to everyone; whenever you're doing business on the internet, when you get to a page that asks you for your credit card number, always check to make sure that the address begins with https://, not http://.

I've seen a lot of sites that ask you to enter credit card information on non-secure pages. Typically they are scam artists who don't care about your credit card information.

However, this is not always the case. Last night I went to renew my tracfone, and the entire payment process was on a non-secure page. Of course, tracfone is set up for secure payments; they just had a programming glitch on their site. But it's a dangerous glitch, as it puts your credit card information at risk.

So I canceled the payment process and fired off an email to them pointing out their problem.

I guess I was hoping I'd get offered a year's service for free in appreciation for my help. No such luck.

Dear customer,

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to service your cellular needs. We are responding to your recent inquiry.

We appreciate your suggestion and value you as a customer. If you should ever have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

But...at least they've fixed their website.

Now if you'll excuse me, I guess I need to go renew my phone service.

Doug Replied: Really? My minutes have always carried over to the next year. I still haven't renewed the service, because their site is having some serious problems. It goes from secure to non-secure to complete garbledy-gook.

Doug Replied: Well, I finally got mine to go through on the web. The day before it expired. How long did yours get extended for? Mine was a year and 15 days, instead of just a year, which I thought was kind of odd, since it SAYS 365 days, and there was no explanation given for the extra time.
