Vacation Bible School, Rural ChurchIt's a good thing I've been teaching my youth group about the importance of "small things" this year, because in a few weeks we're going to be leading a Vacation Bible School in a very small place!I took a ride down to Stow last night to check out the location where we'll be holding our Vacation Bible School (we're actually calling it "Family Bible Time", because we don't want parents to think it's just for their kids!). It is quite a small church. On quite a small plot of land. There's no basement or upstairs, no foyer, so when you walk into the sanctuary, what you see is pretty much what you've got for usable space. And the church is surrounded on three sides by a strip of lawn just about big enough to park three or four rows of cars. We'll be cramped for space playing games with the children, and I have no idea what we'll do if it's a rainy day! ![]() But we'll figure it out. I'll give that to the teens as a challenge, to figure out what kinds of games we can play in a space that small. They'll come up with some good stuff. I also found out that Virginia did a 5-Day Club down there three years ago, so maybe I'll ask her what kinds of stuff they did. Turns out we'll be doing the VBS for two churches - Stow and Lovell together. That'll be nice; I know quite a few people from the Lovell church, and it'll be good to see them again. I stopped in to see Dot on the way home last night. She seems to be doing well, and is the same Dot as ever. ![]() The pastor wanted the children to do an offering every day to pay us for our time, but I discouraged that, because one of the lessons that I've been trying to teach our teens this year is that, when we are able, we serve without expectation of return, and I really didn't want them making a big deal out of "paying" us, all week long. So, since the pastor didn't really have any other ideas, I suggested that perhaps the children's offering could go to the same missions project that our youth group has been supporting this year - the CEF National Office in Moldova. He thought that would be just fine. ![]() Speaking of Moldova, I got an email from Tanya last week, and she says that when she's on furlough next year, she wants to come up and meet our teens, who have given so much toward the National Office. That'll be nice...maybe we can even arrange things so she can come with us on one of our outings. Posted On Jul 15, 2005 at 3:59 AM
