Updating Your AntiVirus SoftwareThis is just a friendly reminder to everyone to keep your AntiVirus Software updated all the time. Many people make the erroneous assumption that AntiVirus software just protects their own computers. In fact, having AntiVirus Software is also a way to protect your friends and family. How?Well, let's suppose that you have my email address in your contact list on your computer. Now let's suppose you get a virus. And the virus wants to propogate itself (that's what viruses do, you know! ). The best way for a virus to propogate itself is to email itself to someone else's computer. If the virus was nice it would use your email address (after all, you're the one who doesn't have AntiVirus software, so it's only fair, right? ).But viruses typically aren't very nice. No, they won't use your address, because if they do, the person who gets the email will reply and say "Hey Joe! You've got a virus on your computer!" So what does the virus do? It looks for some other email address on your computer. Like mine! ![]() And it emails itself out to a bunch of people, forging my email address into the "sender" line. In other words, even though you are the one without AntiVirus software, and I do have AntiVirus software, everyone will think they're getting a virus from me, because it's my email address in the "From" line! ![]() This gets very frustrating when you run a business online, and people receive emails which appear to have come from your business address. "Oh," they think to themselves (and maybe say out loud to their friends) "I wouldn't ever do business with company X, because they have viruses." And of course, that's not true...but they don't know the difference. So...just a friendly reminder...everyone keep that AntiVirus Software updated! ![]() Posted On Jun 14, 2005 at 10:03 AM
