Kiera The Crazy Cat

Last night after youth group (and before I drove back to Cape Elizabeth) Glen and I went to Norway Soft Serve for some ice cream. And as we stood there in the parking lot (getting rained on ) we started swapping cat stories.

This got started, of course, because of Kiera, Jon & Melody's cat that I'm taking care of while they're away. Kiera is an odd cat, a black cat, a tailless cat. I'm not sure how she got to be tailless, but she reminds me of a cat we had when I was growing up named Dorcas who was also tailless. But I shall tell that story another day.

Kiera, for whatever reason, does not like to lie down on the furniture, or on the floor. But if you put anything on the furniture, or the floor, she is quite content to lie down on that. Put a newspaper down, and within minutes she's lying on it. Is the newspaper more comfortable than the sofa? I have my doubts. Kiera has spent hours sleeping on my laptop case. Doesn't look too comfortable, but apparently it beats sleeping on the floor.

And in the morning, when I'm trying to read my Bible, she seems to think that my Bible looks like a very comfortable pillow. Makes it just a tad difficult to read.

Clean laundry is also apparently fair game.

Kiera should be in a commercial for Irish Spring soap. Every morning when I get out of the shower, she wants to lick my toes. Jonathan says she likes the soap, and whenever he changes brands, she loses her toe fascination.

Jonathan told me that I might find her in the mornings sleeping at the foot of my bed. This has not been the case. No, Kiera doesn't like the foot of my bed. She prefers the head of the bed. I think she would probably take over the pillow...if I let her. But I don't. Most nights, as soon as she sees I'm heading for the bedroom, she races in and beats me to the bed (like it's some sort of competition...silly cat!), so I have to move her to get into bed.

And every night at about 2:00 AM, for whatever reason (my theory is that my snoring is bothering her) she starts doing one of the following:

1. Climbing on me
2. Batting my face with her paws
3. Licking my eyebrows

Yesterday morning I woke up before Kiera (an oddity...usually she's back to her climbing and batting and licking around 6:30 or 7:00, while I'm still asleep). I wanted to see what time it was, and my alarm clock is on the floor next to the bed, so I had to lean over to see it...

...and I forgot there was a cat there, so I leaned right into Kiera. Not a big deal, except that I'm not used to having any furry whiskers (besides my own) pressed into my cheek. So I let out a big old yelp, and the next thing I knew, Kiera was on the other side of the house.

Poor cat.

Kiera doesn't like the piano, which is kind of a pity, since Melody is quite a talented pianist, and teaches piano lessons all week long. As soon as anyone hits a key on that thing, she's on the other side of the house before you can blink. She doesn't like my guitar either, but her dislike doesn't seem to be quite as strong...when I take the guitar out, she'll move to the far side of the room, and sit there watching me while I play. Until I start singing.

Really, there's just no accounting for tastes.

Doug Replied: Cat's is great, ain't they?
