Grotonwood and Turnpike Traffic JamsWell, for anyone who is wondering, I got back from Groton Massachusetts last evening around 7:30. And if you heard on the news about a truck carrying explosives that overturned on the Maine Turnpike down in Southern Maine, around Wells, I missed that by about two hours. Good thing...or I would have been stuck on a closed turnpike for about three hours.(In case you missed it, a truck carrying 1,600 pounds of ammonium nitrate and blasting caps, owned by Maine Drilling and Blasting Co. flipped on the Maine Turnpike, and both the north and south lanes were shut down, and people in the vacinity - including a local elementary school - were evacuated) But...just because I missed that doesn't mean my trip was uneventful. On the way home I did get stuck in a brief traffic jam around Lowell, Massachusetts. But that wasn't the worst of it. Somewhere south of Portland, Maine there was a travel advisory notice posted on the pike saying that there was a "vehicle fire" at the Gray exit of the turnpike. That's my exit. I thought about seeking an alternate route, but talked myself out of it.Big mistake. ![]() So I was driving somewhere around five to ten miles per hour all the way from Yarmouth north to Gray. I get very tense in situations like that - so by the time I got off the turnpike and onto route 26, my legs were cramping up a bit. A drive that should have taken under three hours took just about four hours instead. But the good news is, I had a really nice visit with Dan and his family, and got to see the camp where Dan is working now. It's a very nice facility - lots of buildings, both dormitories and meeting buildings, which means they can house a lot of campers at once. They are even able to host multiple groups simultaneously, which not to many camps in Maine are able to do effectively. While I was there, two camps were going on. The first was an environmental camp, and the second was "Banjo Camp North". Yeah. Two hundred banjo players all in one place. My cousin David would have thought he'd died and gone to heaven!
