More Phone PhishingThis is a follow-up to yesterday's entry about phishing scams.Last month I registered several new domain names: www.anti-spam-log.com - Doug's Anti Spam Log, www.patio-de-recreo.com - Doug's Online Playground, plus one other which I'm not ready to publish yet. A week or two later, I got a phone call. It was a programming firm, which wanted to offer their web programming services on "my recently registered domain". Normally, I just say "no thanks" and hang up, but this one struck me as odd. Like the phishing scam I mentioned yesterday, these guys were pretty vague - the scam yesterday talked about being my credit card company, but never mentioned what company that was...these guys referred to my recently registered domain, but didn't mention which domain they were referring to. So I said, "Which domain is that?" "The one you recently registered." "Which one are you referring to." Loooong pause. "Uh, sir, we don't have that information." *click* About fifteen seconds later, the phone rang again. Silly me, I answered it. ![]() "Uh, sir, I believe you just hung up on me. Now, if you'd just listen to what we have to offer..." *click* This time, when the phone rang fifteen seconds later, I didn't answer. But I don't think I shall ever forget this great line: "Uh, sir, I believe you just hung up on me." No kidding! ![]() Posted On May 19, 2005 at 5:12 AM
