Going To Ghana?

I got a call from John R. yesterday; he wanted to know if I would like to go to Africa this spring. Ghana, to be specific. Actually, I'd really like to do that.

There's a national CEF workers' conference, and they're looking for someone to teach seminars on puppetry. So I asked for some of the details. They're looking for a one hour seminar, repeated three times over the course of three days. "What language will they be speaking?" I asked.

"French."

"So I'd be speaking through a translator?"

"Well, unless you got JD to do the teaching..."

(in case you don't know, JD is my French speaking puppet, who also happens to be John's favorite of my puppets. )

I've done puppetry seminars at Christian Education Conferences before (by the way, I'm going to be teaching a couple of puppetry seminars at the CE Conference in Southern Maine this spring), and in an hour I feel like I've just barely skimmed the surface of what needs to be taught. I can't imagine trying to productively teach a useful seminar on puppetry in a situation where I've only got an hour, and it has to be translated, which means in reality I'm doing a half-hour seminar.

So, sadly, I had to give John my regrets on that one. I'd love to take another trip to Africa, but if I make trips like that I want to make sure that they'll be a productive use of my time and money.

That subject actually came up last night at youth group; one of the teens asked me if we were going to be "doing a missions trip" any time. I said that I was exploring a couple different options, but for me the most important thing is that I don't want to take our teens on a missions trip just for the sake of taking a missions trip; I want to make sure that we are going somewhere that we will be put to work in a way that is valuable to the mission.

Doug Replied: Woah! It's Trent! So you ARE still alive!

So, you might be going to Ghana?
