4000 Footers In The State Of MaineAfter posting about my hike to Avery Peak (Avery Peak - Beautiful Views in the Bigelow Mountain Range), I decided to follow that up with a list of 4000 footers (4000 foot mountain peaks) in the state of Maine. One of my climbing goals is to hike all of them. Not every peak over 4000 feet tall is on this list; here is the AMC's (Appalachian Mountain Club) criteria for a mountain to be listed: 1. The peak must be 4000 ft. high. 2. The peak must rise 200 ft. above the low point of its connecting ridge with a higher neighbor. Thus, although Pamola Peak (Katahdin) is one of the highest in the state, since it is connected to Baxter Peak by Knife Edge, a ridge which does not drop 200 feet below Pamola, AMC does not classify it as a 4000 footer. (too bad, since I've already done Pamola!) So, with that in mind, here is Maine's list of 4000 footers. I'll underline the ones I've done. I will keep this list up-to-date in my Amateur-Hikers.com User Profile. 1. Katahdin, Baxter Peak (5268 feet) 2. Katahdin, Hamlin Peak (4756 feet) 3. Sugarloaf (4250 feet) 4. Old Speck (4170 feet) 5. Crocker (4228 feet) 6. Bigelow, West Peak (4145 feet) 7. North Brother (4151 feet) 8. Saddleback (4120 feet) 9. Bigelow, Avery Peak (4090 feet) 10. Abraham 4050 feet) 11. Saddleback, the Horn (4041 feet) 12. South Crocker (4050 feet) 13. Redington (4010 feet) 14. Spaulding (4010 feet) As you can see, I've still got a long ways to go in bagging all these. Brian...more than half of these are in your neck of the woods (Redington, Spaulding, South Crocker, Crocker, Saddleback, West Peak, Avery Peak, Abraham), so let me know when you want to tackle one of ones I haven't done yet! ![]() Posted On Sep 6, 2005 at 9:37 AM
