Teenagers Serving in the Church and Community

I thought I'd tell just a little bit about our luncheon we had last Saturday. This was an event the youth group hosted for the "Spice Of Life" group at church (in reality, the "Spice Of Life" group is currently defunct, so we defined the group as we wanted to define it, which was, anyone 55+).

One Wednesday night a couple months ago we spent our game time writing invitations to our guests, and the total was somewhere around 60 people that were invited. According to the RSVPs, we were going to have about 30 guests attending. Of course, it was Easter weekend (probably not the best planning on our part) so we lost a few of those because they were busy preparing Easter meals, or because they had so many other church commitments that week. But we still had a very good attendance.

Cathy organized the workers to prepare the sandwiches, salads and desserts. She also worked with the teens on getting tables set up and decorated, and they planned some "door prize" type games.

So we had the luncheon, and then one of the teens led one of the games (in which she asked questions like "Who has the most grandchildren?", "Who has had a driver's license the longest?" "Who has visited the most countries?", and then the winner got a prize.)

Then I led some singing, and then Daniel sang "Jesus Loves Me". In reality, he sort of "grunted" it - if you know Daniel, you know what I mean. But while I was singing the words, he was doing the sign language. He did a really good job, and he didn't even get shy and hide his face (which he's been doing a lot lately, so I didn't know how that was going to work!)

Then I shared an "intergenerational" lesson from Psalm 127, and talked about the "builders", the "protectors", and the "people at the city gates".

After that one of the girls handed out one last door prize, and we were finished. Very nice event, I thought. The teens did a great job preparing it, Cathy did a great job organizing it, and everyone seemed to have a great time. We have been asked several times "Are you going to do this every year?" I think that was more a hint than a question!!

Then on Tuesday we took a crew of teenagers around to various homes of folks who needed yard work done (you can read a little more about that here: Yard Work and Spring Cleaning) One of the homes we went to, there was hardly anything that needed to be done...I think she just wanted to have some people come visit her, and this was her excuse. One of the other homes we went to we raked up about 10 bags of pine needles off her lawn!

Hmm...and then yesterday, the teens were invited to a "volunteer luncheon" at the nursing home, where they were recognized for the work they do leading a church service at the nursing home once per month.

I can't help thinking how envious many youth group leaders would be if they knew what a willing group of teens we've got here at South Paris - I know there are a lot of youth groups that the teens don't want to do anything but be entertained. Thankfully, we don't have a group like that!
