Sixth Grade Party, Christian Ed ConferenceIn my previous post I mentioned that we had our "Sixth Grade Welcome Party" coming up in the youth group, and that I was going to the Christian Education Conference on Saturday. So this is my report on those two things. The party for the sixth graders was a lot of fun for everyone - we played Castle Dodgeball (a game I learned at Camp Good News) and then Glen did the "Hide the Mountain Dew" game, in which they split into two teams and each team hides a twelve pack of Mountain Dew in the church. The two teams tied - they each found 11 of the twelve cans. Daniel was happy because the can he hid was one of the cans that no one could find. ![]() Then I talked to the group about Jesus, and how he grew up in a litte one-horse-town (I compared Nazareth the Buckfield. ) and then when he was twelve they went to the big city of Jerusalem, and with all the big city attractions, it was to the temple that Jesus went, and that's where his family found him.I told the sixth graders that moving up into the youth group was kind of like making the move from Nazareth to Jerusalem - there were a whole lot more "attractions", and a lot of fun stuff to do, but I didn't want them to lose site of what was really important. So then I talked to them about the ministries the youth group is involved in, and read the thank you note to the youth group that I received Friday. Then we had snacks, prepared by Lori's prayer group, and sent them on home. We had (not counting the fifth and fourth graders who showed up that technically shouldn't have been there) six new people in youth group. I think we'll see most of them coming back again. The Christian Education Conference was very good, although very poorly attended. I was surprised at how low the attendance was. I heard someone say it was about half the normal attendance, and I believe that might be true. Both of my seminars I had an hour and ten minutes with the group, and I ran out of time for both of them. One of the seminars, most of the people in the group got my email address, so they could ask me more questions. The other one, I was out of time just about the time I got to the very last section of my notes, but fortunately, the last section was virtually identical to Bob Frederichs' keynote address for the day, so I was able to zip through it really fast and say: "Pay attention to what Bob Frederichs said this morning!"After that seminar was over, I was approached by one Christian Ed director who wants me to come to her church and do that same seminar for all her teachers. Then someone else overheard me saying that I develop websites, and may have some work for me. In the ministry display room I had the Porters (the new director for CEF in Southern Maine) to my left. It was nice to meet them (although they said that Trent had "warned" them about me. ) Before coming to Maine, they had spent eight years as missionaries to Haiti.Oddly enough, to my right was Pam Brochu, who I had heard of, but hadn't met. So I was able to introduce these two "strangers" and watch them spend the next hour talking about Haiti! ![]() And behind me was Bob Sloma from Blueberry Mountain. I had met Bob once or twice, but had never really got a chance to talk to him. He wants to get me up to Blueberry next summer to speak, which I would love to do, and hope I'll be able to get it into my schedule! Well, the conference really tired me out - I actually went to bed at 8:30 last night (that's about 3 hours earlier than usual!) and didn't get up until 6:30 this morning. I'm feeling quite refreshed with 10 hours of sleep! Posted On Apr 30, 2006 at 4:15 AM On Apr 30, 2006 Mr. T wrote: Quote:

It seems a little tame for what I told them. Doug Replied: oh really?? ![]() On May 1, 2006 Trent wrote: well, it may not have been alllllll bad.
