My Space Stupidity

Since some teens I know have MySpace accounts, I registered an account of my own a few months back. My first impression of MySpace was the impression of a software/website developer: It's a piece of junk. Very very very badly designed website. Yuk. I can't believe it has been ranked as the #5 most popular site in the world.

My second impression: I dislike the raunchy dating service ads that show up on the site (although I was amused by the one which bragged "we screen for felons". Oh. I feel so much better.

My third impression: I dislike how easy it is to stumble across very very inappropriate material.

My fourth impression: It is an interesting way to gain insight into the sheer stupidity of our society. For instance, one of my MySpace friends recently answered a survey on MySpace. Her answers were good, sensible, reasonable answers. But the questions themselves gave me the heebie-jeebies. Here's my favorite:

Survey Question: Have you had five or more boyfriends/girlfriends since the beginning of the summer?

Does this tell you something about our society? What is the matter with our society that people would actually think that's a good survey question???? Does the normal teenager now go through relationships at a rate of one girlfriend every 2.6 weeks?

Alright. Enough ranting.

I went to Sherwood Forest Campground this weekend, and did a concert. It was very poorly attended (on a rainy day, people who have to check out by noon don't stick around any longer than they have to...as soon as they realize it's going to be a rainy day, they pack up and leave, so not too many people make it to the "church" service.) The ironic thing is, when they do Sunday meetings, they get best attendance in good weather, but when they do Saturday evening meetings, they get best attendance in bad weather (nothing else to do, but they aren't going to pack up and go home yet!)

Even though there was low attendance, I really had a good time this morning, and the folks who were there were very appreciative of the message.

But anyway, I may be going back there next summer for their Fourth of July festivities.

Bobby & Katie had a very nice wedding ceremony yesterday, and Bobby's dad hit me up about coming to speak at their Bible camp next summer. I probably will do that...I can't believe I'm already booking stuff for next summer!

I can understand why adults are so concerned about the site - I mean, for older, mature teens it can be a good place to interact with friends, and even Christian bands (since "everyone" is on there), as long as that's all they're doing - but giving younger kids unrestricted access to the site is crazy. It's like letting a child wander alone in the mall. Some parents seem to think a website is "safer" because they won't get physically lost, but in my opinion it can be a lot more dangerous if the wrong things happen.

yes indeed.
