Dear Abby - Integrity and Relationships

Dear Abby: After I dated an older man, I gained a bad reputation among some lower-level, gossipy co-workers at my job, even though I tried to keep it quiet, and even denied it.

Now I've started a friendship with an older man at the company where I work. Although we are just friends, these co-workers think there is something more and are spreading gossip, saying that we are having an affair.

This could be damaging to both my career and my friendships with the man and my co-workers. How can I stop the gossip? Or does my past behavior make me forever guilty?

That was in the paper this morning, and I thought Abby's response was a bit off the mark, as she didn't even address the most important phrase in the letter:

Dear Abby: After I dated an older man, I gained a bad reputation among some lower-level, gossipy co-workers at my job, even though I tried to keep it quiet, and even denied it...

Here's my response...

Dear Not Loving It: Of course you can't stop the gossip. You have proven yourself to be a person without integrity by lying about the relationship you were having. Of course people won't believe you now because they know they couldn't believe you then. For now your responsibility is to change your character, and become a person of integrity, and hope and pray that in the months and years it takes for people to learn that they can trust you, you don't destroy this poor man's reputation.

And shame on you for being more concerned about how this affects you than how it affects him.

It's probably a good thing I don't have an advice column, huh?

Hey, I have an idea - maybe you should start an advice column! You could use Uncle Jim as the poster boy, and call it "sage advice from a wizened olde geezer." Heehee.

Doug Replied: Believe it or not, I was actually thinking just how much fun it would be for Uncle Jim to have his own advice column!

I thought about posting your question without a response, but I figured a lot of people wouldn't get the joke.

So, here's the reply: git a spel chekr.

Good luck,
Uncle Jim

ps - This reminded me of an elementary student I had once, who wrote on her spelling test:

I love math and spilling
