Matching Game at The Problem Site

Anyone want to try out a new game I've been building? It's not yet complete, but I'd love to have feedback on the game.

It's called "Trio Match", and you can get to it through the following link: Trio Match - Shape and Color Matching Game

There are no instructions posted there, so let me explain how this works. It's a little bit like Tetris, in that you've got a "well", and you're dropping tiles into the well. But that's about where the similarity ends.

In this game, you have 9 kinds of tiles. Each tile has a color and a shape (three colors, three shapes, 3x3=9, funny how that works!) The colors are red, green, and blue. The shapes are square, circle, and triangle.

On the right you will see a tile that's labeled "Current Block". This is the tile you will drop. You choose where to drop it by clicking on one of the four arrows above the well. You will also see three tiles labeled "Next Blocks". These are the next three tiles you'll be dropping.

Your goal is to make "trios" of tiles, sets of three in which one of the following is true:

all three are the same shape and color,
all three are the same shape but all different colors,
all three are the same color but all are different shapes,
all three are different shapes and all are different colors.

If you create a trio like that, the three tiles disappear, and any tiles that might be above them drop down.

The different kinds of trios are worth different point values:

same shape and color: 100 points
same shape, different color: 200 points
same color, different shape: 200 points
different shape, different color: 400 points

Also, if you drop a block in such a way that it creates two trios, you will receive a bonus of 500 points. If you create three trios with a single tile, you receive a bonus of 1000 points.

Each time you drop a tile, if you make any trios, those trios will show up on the right hand side, along with the point values, and any bonus points awarded.

Now...here's why the game isn't yet finished.

1. As it is now, the game goes on forever, because - unlike Tetris - you aren't in a hurry, so you can plan carefully and never reach the top of the well. I think the best thing to do is to have a limit to the number of tiles you get to drop (ie - the game lasts for 20 drops, or something like that). If you have any suggestions or ideas on that, let me know!

2. Eventually (once I've resolved issue #1), I think I'm going to have a "daily high score", so people can try to beat the high score for the day, and put their initials in.

So now the only way it's worthwhile to get one of those is if in so doing you get TWO trios at once, giving you the 500 point bonus.

Hmmm...I might try changing it so a trio of same/same is an automatic END to the game, instead of minus points...

On Mar 12, 2006 Laura wrote: I love it!!! I was up to 6,300 points before aol kicked me off, but I'll definitely try to get higher than that now ;-) There's actually another version of tetris called "color tetris" that I used to play a lot, and this reminds me a little more of that than regular tetris. In that, the individual blocks of the tetris shapes were different colors, and the aim was to get at least 3 in a row of the same color, and then they'd disappear. I like this game though, because it doesn't speed up on each new level so there's more time to think :-)

Doug Replied: Yeah, you have all the time in the world to think through your next move, so it's much more thoughtful than it is reflexive.

The version I'm playing around with on my local computer (haven't uploaded it to the site yet) The game ends after twenty-five moves, or when you get a same/same trio. So you have to pay careful attention to NOT getting one of those!

On Mar 12, 2006 Laura wrote: Okay, the game I was playing just ended, and it was right when I was about to reach 14,000 points, so I thought maybe you'd just made that the points cut-off. I didn't get any same/same trios though :-)

Doug Replied: Yeah, that's because I'm messing with the page.

On Mar 12, 2006 Doug wrote: Hmmm...I think I need to make it so if you get two trios at once, your game is extended by a few tiles. For now, I'll stop playing with it, though, so I don't mess up any more of Laura's games.

On Mar 12, 2006 Doug wrote: Okay, revised rules, as of 3:00 PM, March 12

same/same trio ends the game
same/different trio = 200 points
different/same trio = 200 points
different/different trio = 400 points

you have 25 tiles in the game, unless you get multiple trios in a single turn:

2 trios adds 5 tiles to your game ( and adds 500 points)
3 trios adds 10 tiles to your game (and adds 1000 points)

On Mar 12, 2006 Laura wrote: I beat you, hahaha! Yeah, I was kinda wondering why everything was reset all of a sudden.
Hey, I have an idea - why don't you create an "everlasting" mode too? Where players can just rack up hundreds of thousands of points in an effort to top each other. Although, seeing as it's mid-term time, maybe that wouldn't be such a good idea.

Doug Replied: You may have beat me, but...

Hahaha! I beat YOU! I think I'll pass on the "everlasting" mode...it's not like I have unlimited bandwidth for bored college students.

On Mar 13, 2006 Doug wrote: Alrighty, I'm going to stop posting updates to the rules here, because I now have the rules posted on the game page. The last changes I made...now getting a same/same trio gives you 500 points, in addition to ending your game.

The purpose for this is, if you get down to your last few tiles and don't see anything else to do, you can "go out with a bang".

I've also added an "all time high score" listing, and I currently hold the record, but I don't imagine that'll last too long!
