Pi Day - The Song Of PiI was reminded today that it tomorrow is Pi Day! (Pi is approximately 3.14, so March 14 is Pi day) A math teacher from the local Christian academy asked me for my "Pi Song".So. The Pi song. Here it is: Song Of Pi This is a song we sang in my high school math team (yes, we were truly math geeks in every sense of the word!) The lyrics are quite simple, and the tune is the same tune as the Alphabet song: 3.141592 653589793 238462 64338 Now I know my song of pi Next I'll poke you in the eye Isn't that beautiful? ![]() Well, I made My New Game active on The Problem Site today, although I've left in a disclaimer that the game is still undergoing testing. Heh. So far nobody has beat my high score. Although someone did come close! And finally, click here for an amusing story. Well..I thought it was amusing...particularly episodes three and four. ![]() Posted On Mar 13, 2006 at 4:56 PM On Mar 14, 2006 Mr. T wrote: So - why are there TWENTY-SEVEN digits in the Pi song, when there are only TWENTY-SIX letters in the alphabet? When I learned the song, we only had 26 digits, like the alphabet song! It must have changed between you and I! Also - we have now changed the ending at our school. It ends with "Now I've sung the digits of PI, next I'll teach you about the number i"! Doug Replied: "It must have changed between you and I!" eh...I hate to break this to you, but we were in high school at the same time. ![]() Anyway, I was aware of your *ahem* alternate ending. Sadly disloyal of you. ![]() On Mar 14, 2006 Mr. T wrote: Yes, we were in high school at the same time, but I think you altered the song after Chris M (who I think made the original tune?) and myself and others graduated. After all - you were there for two whole years without me watching over you, and had plenty of time to corrupt the song! ![]() Doug Replied: err...Chris didn't make the original tune...that's the alphabet song. So if someone altered the song it was probably to make the numbers fit the rhythm of the letters better. (Which is why there's that silly section that the numbers come really fast - it matches the "LMNOP" part of the alphabet song.)On Mar 14, 2006 BackStage wrote: RE: Amusing Story Yeah, yeah...go ahead and laugh at my expense. ![]() Doug Replied: ![]() On Mar 14, 2006 Mr. T wrote: Quote:
Sorry - Chris put the numbers to the alphabet tune. You still don't explain why you have 27 digits, when there are only 26 letters???? Adding the extra digit at the end doesn't really make it "fit" the tune! By the way - I've played your song for two of my classes so far!! Doug Replied: Well Brian, if you want to find out why someone modified it (if they did) you'd have to find the person who did the modifying and ask them. But here are a couple possibilities. 1. If (as it sounds like from your message) the change was at the very end (maybe adding in the "and" syllable between Y and Z?) then adding that extra syllable closes the musical phrase better. If that's where the change is, I would imagine that either Chris himself, or maybe David changed it, being the musical boys that they were. 2. The other thing is, whoever changed it may have wanted to have 26 digits after the decimal point. On Mar 14, 2006 Doug wrote: On another subject. Someone beat my high score on Trio Match. According to my site stats, last night someone from Canada came on and played that game for about two hours and seven minutes straight. I guess they liked it. ![]() On Mar 14, 2006 Beth wrote: It would be weird of me not to wish you "Happy Pi Day!" on this day. The person at Medomak who memorizes the most numbers of Pi on this day gets a gold plated pie server with their name and accomplishment engraved on it. It was started my junior year when a classmate of mine memorized 100 numbers. That's a lot! Doug Replied: Sadly, I can no longer do 100 digits...my memory ain't what it used to be... 3.1415926535897932384626433832795 02884197169399375105820974944... and that's as far as I remember. ![]() (and happy pi day to you too!) On Mar 14, 2006 Beth wrote: I just realized that I said "gold plated." Medomak definitely can't afford to cover pie servers with real gold. I should say "gold painted" ![]() Doug Replied: good point! ![]()
