Expectations - LOST Television ShowThere's expectations, and then there's EXPECTATIONS. This blog entry contains a *spoiler* from last night's episode of LOST, so if you haven't watched it yet, and you don't want to have it spoiled for you, don't read any more. The episode centered around two characters who are not major players in the show - Nikki and Paulo. At the beginning of the episode Nikki comes stumbling out of the jungle, and then dies, right there on the beach. A little bit later in the episode we find out that Paulo has also died. As the episode progresses, the rest of the castaways prepare to bury the two. The holes are dug (this is not the first time we've had funerals on the island) and everyone gets ready to say their goodbyes (certainly not as heartfelt as at other times, since these are not major characters). But then, in the last few minutes of the episode, we suddenly learn (although only the viewers know this, not the characters) that Nikki and Paulo are NOT dead - they have merely been bitten by a spider whose venom causes a complete paralysis and virtual shutdown of all bodily functions for several hours. So then, for the last few minutes of the show, you're sitting on the edge of your seat wondering: "Will they 'wake up' before they get buried alive?" And the answer is... Yes...the woman's eyes open just as a shovelful of dirt is dumped right on her face. And the castaways never see, and they finish burying them alive. It was actually one of the creepiest endings I've seen to a Lost episode. But here's what I found myself thinking - since I'm sitting on the edge of my seat, at some level of my consciousness I'm obviously thinking: "This could go either way. They could die or not." And yet, when I realized that they were buried alive, I was shocked. Why? Because at some other level I was thinking "There's no way the writers are going to let them die like this." At two different levels of my concsiousness, I had two different sets of expectations of how this might turn out. And is there any point to this? Well, only this...although I don't have time to think about it too deeply right now, it occurs to me that these levels of expectation might in some way be related to a difference between HOPE and FAITH. And that's all I have time for right now, so I'll leave it to my readers to post their thoughts. I'm getting ready to speak at a Father-Son retreat at Monadnock Bible Conference this weekend. I'm not sure how much internet access I'll have while I'm there, so if you post a comment, it might not get up here immediately. Have a good weekend everyone! Posted On Mar 29, 2007 at 11:45 AM
