Pirates of the Caribbean, Lost, ConcertTwo updates in one week? What's up with that?![]() Pirates Of The Caribbean - At World's End I went to a screening of "Pirates Of The Caribbean - At World's End" Tuesday night. With previews, about 3 hours long. I promised Laura I wouldn't say anything about it until she gets a chance to see it, so on the chance that she might read this today, I won't say anything, merely post a link to my review: Pirates Of The Caribbean At World's End Don't click that link, Laura! ![]() LOST Season Finale of LOST was last night. Every television show tries to do a cliffhanger at the end of the season, to generate anticipation for the next season. Mostly they just put a character in mortal danger, so we'll be wondering if/how he'll get out of the tight spot. After seeing many of those kinds of cliffhangers, they don't really do much anymore. I think LOST has succeeded in creating one of the few effective cliffhangers I've seen...you don't walk away from the episode thinking "Is Charlie really dead?". You walk away thinking: "This could change the entire direction of the show..." I think it's going to generate a lot of discussion over the next few months while we wait for the next episode! Ventriloquism, Preaching, Singing I was reminded a couple days ago (by Ben Bailey) that I have something else I really need to be working on before I head off for summer camps. And that's the presentation I'll be sharing at churches this coming fall. Not that I haven't been thinking about it at all - I've thought about it enough to formulate a general theme, but that's about it. Last year I had a two part presentation, plus a concert. This year I'm not going to do that, because that made my schedule WAY too busy. I was out speaking/singing somewhere every SUnday from Labor Day until the week before Christmas. And some of those Sundays I was out TWICE. So my current plan is that in my two part presentation (Part I: Sunday School, Part II: church), Part II will be much more music oriented. (And will also stand alone, for those churches that want me to do just the concert) The concert will be titled Join The Chorus, and will include the following: The Voice Of The Lord (From Psalm 19) Come Let Us Worship (From Psalm 95) Every Good Gift (From James 1, done as a congregational sing-along) I Want The Church's One Foundation Let Us Be One (another congregational sing-along) The Only Thing Join The Chorus Rather than having a "sermon" in the traditional sense, this concert will include short devotionals between various songs in the concert. I will probably also include a song/skit from one of the puppets at the beginning, although I haven't figured out what that'll be. There were just too many characters all going different directions in this one. And the one-on-one scenes did make things a whole lot better - that's really why people loved Captain Jack's character so much in the first one - you learn a lot more about him when you see him interacting with people one-on-one, and in groups, instead of just by himself or as part of a crew. And, yeah, I really don't know whey they decided to make Jack schizophrenic in this one. Worked for Smeagol so it must work for him, right? I'd have to disagree about the character of Callipso, though. I really like the way she talks, and I think she was a success in the second movie, which is why they decided to bring her back and make her a more major character. Plus, I thought it was pretty clear in the second one that the woman she was talking about in reference to Davy Jones was herself, so I figured they'd at least wrap that up in #3. Still, I think one thing that made her good in #2 was her sense of mystery - and since that's all divulged in #3, it's not as intriguing as #2. And, this may be just me, but considering the scene after the credits involved a child, I'm kinda glad they at least had the dignity to throw a marriage ceremony in there somewhere. Did you really see that as setting it up for another sequel though? I kinda saw it as the opposite. That if they were going to do another, they wouldn't bother giving us a 10-years-into-the-future sequence like that. To me it seemed like they were just wrapping it up even further. But we'll see - I also hope this is the last one, unless they decide to do some kind of spin-off. But yeah, I think it's pretty sad that filmmakers weren't able to see what worked and what didn't work before - kinda makes you wonder if the first one was more of an accident than anything else, because when they try to duplicate it, they end up just simplifying the good qualities so much in their attempt to copy them, that they don't do it at all. I guess that's the downside to having to write more screenplays after a movie has already been successful - that's something that at least good movies like The Lord of the Rings didn't have to worry about too much, because the story was already there. By the way, did you happen to see the preview for the second National Treasure movie? :-D Doug Replied: Heh...Callipso works for you because you're 20 years old. Wait until you've started to lose some of your hearing in the upper frequency ranges. I didn't understand anything she said in either movie, and was so indifferent to it that I never even bothered to rent the second one to watch it with subtitles.I know the movie makers are gearing these toward a young audience, but there's no excuse for making it incomprehensible to the rest of us. Regarding the child - I agree that it's good there was a wedding ceremony. But the ceremony itself was so utterly irrational that there is no reason for it to happen the way it did except that they couldn't figure out any other way to make it happen. I think it was a case of "the needs of the plotline dictating the actions of the characters", which I think is one of the worst sins a story teller can commit. Maybe I should have said it was a plotline that "came from nowhere" rather than a plotline that "went nowhere" Oh...as for the "setup" for another movie - I wasn't referring to the scene after the credits - I was referring to Jack heading off in search of The Fountain Of Youth. I absolutely did see the National Treasure trailer. I had no idea they were making a sequel, but as soon as I saw the beginning of the trailer, I thought "this looks like a National Treasure trailer!" I'm excited about that one!
