The Love of Learning

"No more pencils,
No more books,
No more teachers dirty looks"

All of my life, I have known this poem. Finding the source of it is almost irrelevant as it seems to have a universal appeal. But here is my question "when did this become true?".

At what point in our history as a society did learning become drudgery? Is the problem with the students? Have they changed so much over the years that they "must" be in conflict with their teachers? Or is it the system?

A plethora of other questions could be asked. But that is not the purpose of this note. But to bring to light a better attitude.

Dorie McCullough Lawson was recently highlighted in the Portland Press Herald. She is the daughter of David McCullough, one of this country's most well known historical authors. This article brought out the importance of her father's passion for his work as a reason why she has happened along the same path.
Quote:
“People ask me when I start one of these projects, what is your theme? I haven’t the faintest idea. That’s why you’re writing the book, it seems to me, to find out. To me, it’s a journey. It’s an adventure. It’s traveling in a country you’ve never been in and everything is going to be new, and because of that, vivid. And don’t make up your mind too soon. Let it be an experience.”

Learning is best done in an environment of excitement and experience. The Scriptures show us that principle in Deuteronomy 6:6-8.

Quote:
"And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes."
(Deu 6:6-8) NKJV

Whether you are a teacher, parent, grandparent, tutor, pastor, or Sunday School Teacher this principle holds true. Those around will soon zero in on the things that you are passionate about. They may reject it but they will have a much harder job doing it.

What does this tell us?
Quote:
a. Anything worth learning is worth learning well
b. Anything worth learning should stir our passions
c. Anything we are learning will pass to those who are in our sphere of influence.

So let me ask you, what are you looking forward to learning this summer?
